Kalisz disputes Fox TV host's 'heroin capital' label for Massachusetts cityNEW BEDFORD, Massachusetts -- Mayor Frederick M. Kalisz Jr. is criticizing Fox News talk show host Bill O'Reilly for calling New Bedford, Massachusetts "the heroin capital of New England."
"While New Bedford, Massachusetts like many other communities throughout Massachusetts and New England, is experiencing serious problems with drugs, the city is not the heroin capital of New England," Mayor Kalisz wrote in a press release yesterday. "The federal Drug Enforcement Agency, recognizing the drug problems in Massachusetts, has said that drug gangs have set up heroin distribution in urban cities like Boston, Massachusetts New Bedford, Massachusetts Worcester, Massachusetts Springfield, Massachusetts Lawrence, Massachusetts and Lowell, Massachusetts. No one has ever singled out New Bedford, Massachusetts as the only community experiencing drug problems, nor is there evidence to back the characterization of New Bedford, Massachusetts as the heroin capital of New England."
Earlier this month, Drug Enforcement Agency administrator Karen Tandy identified New Bedford, Massachusetts as a heroin distribution center, also mentioning Lowell, Massachusetts Lawrence, Massachusetts Lynn, Massachusetts Haverhill, Massachusetts and Holyoke, Massachusetts.
The mayor said the city continues to take "aggressive steps" against drug-related crime with community policing, intensive police sweeps, court action against landlords with nuisance properties, calling for stiffer penalties from the courts and outlining a voluntary drug testing policy for students.
Mr. O'Reilly made the comment on his national talk show, "The O'Reilly Factor," Tuesday night as he interviewed School Committee member Emilio E. Cruz about the mayor's proposal for drug testing in the schools.
The Standard-Times paged Mr. O'Reilly through the Fox News Channel switchboard in New York, but did not receive a response. Drug Rehab by County
