Christmas 'crack' down in MassachusettsTAUNTON - More than 20 police officers swept through the city yesterday with a stack of warrants, scooping up nearly two dozen alleged crack dealers accused of peddling drugs at a public housing project and a Winthrop Street pub.
As of press time last night police were still hunting crack dealers during a massive city-wide drug sweep dubbed Operation Crackdown, said Vice Det. Sgt. Michael Grundy.
For the past three months an undercover police officer from Bristol, R.I., bought crack cocaine and heroin from dealers on more than 40 occasions, mostly in the area of the Fairfax Gardens public housing project on DeWert Avenue and from inside the Lounge 44/O'Duinnan's bar on Winthrop Street, said Grundy.
The operation was run by members of the Taunton police vice unit, working in conjunction with the South Coast Anti-Crime Team, which is made up of police from a half-dozen communities and sponsored by the Bristol County Sheriff's department, said Grundy.
In all, 40 arrest warrants were obtained from Taunton District Court for about 25 alleged crack dealers, Grundy said.
Police officers from Taunton, Somerset, Seekonk, Swansea, Rehoboth and Dighton, as well as officers from the Bristol County Sheriff's office, working in teams with K-9 officers and police dogs, began serving the arrest warrants at around 1 p.m. yesterday at the Fairfax Gardens public housing project on DeWert Avenue, where about half of the alleged drug deals occurred, said Grundy.
Arrested on warrants for distributing crack cocaine were Anabal Torres, 17, of 44 DeWert Ave., William Lopes, 33, of 40 DeWert Ave., Carlos Santiago, 26, of 22 DeWert Ave., and Jose Fernandes, 18, of DeWert Ave.
Police also arrested Anthony Serrano, 29, of 66 High St., and Orlando Ocasio of 176 School St., at Fairfax Gardens for possession with the intent to distribute marijuana.
Later last night Vice Detectives Grundy, Edward Pearson, and Christopher Williams raided the Lounge 44 at 15 Winthrop St. and arrested several patrons and a former bartender on drug charges.
Kelly Gagnon, 28, of 1 Kilmer Ave., Terrance Newell, 31, of 19 Spring St., Randall Darby, 28, of New Bedford, and Robert Few, 37, of Winthrop St., all allegedly sold crack cocaine to the undercover officer in the past three months, police said.
Detectives Williams and Pearson also searched the bathroom and allegedly found more than 20 bags of crack cocaine hidden in the trash, underneath the garbage bag.
"They would hide the drugs in the bathroom and make their deals in there, so if anyone searched them in the bar they would be clean," Williams explained.
A bouncer at the bar is also wanted on drug charges, Grundy said.
Police said the owner of Lounge 44, John Downing, was not present when his bar was raided. While Downing is not facing criminal charges, Grundy said the owner will likely be called before the city's License Commission for a disciplinary hearing.
One of the alleged crack dealers arrested, Jesse Teixeira, 17, of 66 Cohannet St., was the star running back for the Taunton High School varsity football team.
Grundy said Teixeira allegedly sold crack cocaine to the undercover officer on three separate occasions from his Cohannet Street home. He was arrested and charged with distributing crack cocaine.
Two of Teixeira's cousins were also arrested at a liquor store on Cohannet Street on drug and weapons charges after police staked out Teixeira's home.
While looking for Teixeira, police spotted two black men wearing hooded sweatshirts walking out of Teixeira's yard at 66 Cohannet St. Not sure if one of the men was Teixeira, police followed the pair as they walked into Eagan's Package Store at 48 Cohannet St.
Grundy, Det. James Dykas, and two members of the South Coast Anti-Crime Team followed the men into the liquor store and saw them standing at the counter. Grundy said he spotted one of the men put his hand under his sweatshirt, as if he was hiding something, so the officers drew their weapons and ordered them onto the floor.
Police found a loaded .380 caliber handgun and 25 rocks of crack cocaine on the men. Chad Benjamin, 26, of 19 Stanley Ave., was arrested and charged with illegal possession of a firearm and trafficking in crack cocaine. Edson Miranda, 25, of Brockton, was arrested for trafficking in crack cocaine.
Also, Patrolman Robert Kramer arrested two more men on crack trafficking charges. Their names were not available as of press time.
Grundy said DeWert Avenue has become an open air market for crack dealers, with customers traveling to Taunton from throughout Southeastern Massachusetts to buy drugs.
"People have been coming from all over the Cape to DeWert or to [Lounge 44] to buy crack," said Grundy. "We want to get to the major dealers, and to do that you have to start with the street dealers."
Benjamin and Miranda were being held last night on $20,000 cash bail. Teixeira and Santiago were held on $3,000 cash bail.
The alleged drug dealers are scheduled to be arraigned today in Taunton District Court. Drug Rehab by County
